Former Lithuanian national biathlete Linas Banis, who died suddenly at the age of 27, was laid to rest in Vilnius, the national federation reported. The biathlon world was recently shocked by the death in a hotel room of Norwegian Sievert Guttorm Bakken.

A renowned athlete, Banis competed at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, three World Championships, World Cup competitions, and was the Lithuanian champion. He ended his career in 2024.

As Delfi reports, the biathlete's body was discovered in a rented apartment by the homeowner, who was unable to reach Linas by phone and open the door.
The key was in the lock from the inside. The owner of the apartment tried to disassemble the lock, but in vain. Through the keyhole, he still saw a person lying on the floor, so he called for help. The police, ambulance doctors and firefighters arrived at the scene. Unfortunately, the boy was dead. The neighbor said that she had not seen him for about three days.

According to the unofficial version, the cause of Banis' death was a heart attack.
“I know that the forensic experts have already conducted an autopsy. One of the versions is that the heart stopped. Why? At such a young age… I don't know anything else,” said the deceased's friend , biathlete Tomas Kaukenas .
We should add that Linas Banis, who would have turned 28 on April 6,'s best result at the World Cup stages was 61st place in Östersund, Sweden. As part of the relay team at the 2022 Olympic Games, he finished in 14th place, along with Tomas Kaukenas, Vytautas Strolei, and Karolis Dombrovskis.
