French defense giant Thales has unveiled SkyDefender, an innovative air defense system capable of detecting ballistic missiles at record distances. The system responds to threats in seconds and provides comprehensive protection in all areas: from land to space.

Main theses:

  • SkyDefender is an innovative air defense system from French defense giant Thales.
  • The complex is capable of detecting ballistic missiles at record distances and provides complete protection in all areas, from land to space.

French company Thales introduced a new air defense system

Thales officially announced the launch of the new product on its website and during a special press conference.

The French have created a multi-level air defense system that combines sensors, radars and weapons into a single network controlled by cortAIx artificial intelligence. The system operates on the principle of open architecture, which means full compatibility with systems already in service with different countries. The developers assure that defense has become proactive.

SkyDefender is an integrated, multi-layered, multi-domain air and missile defense system that provides comprehensive protection against all types of air threats, on land, at sea and in space. SkyDefender integrates a network of advanced sensors and actuators with a universal command and control (C2) system. Thanks to its open and modular architecture, it is fully compatible with existing air defense systems.

The defense is divided into peculiar tiers. For “close combat” against drones, LMM missiles and anti-aircraft guns are used. By the way, these missiles are already successfully operating on the front in Ukraine. The medium range is covered by the SAMP-T NG system – it sees targets at a distance of up to 150 km.

But the real power of the complex is in the long-range segment. Geostationary satellites with infrared sensors detect the launch of a ballistic missile from 5,000 kilometers away. The data is instantly transmitted to ground-based UHF and Smart-L MM radars. The speed is impressive.

With SkyDefender, Thales offers a battle-proven system that is easy to integrate and available today, confirming our position as a reliable long-term partner for armed forces. Within seconds, the command and control center will determine the “best way” to neutralize the threat.

The system does not yet use interceptor drones. However, the designers left room for future upgrades, as SkyDefender is ready to be upgraded as new challenges arise on the battlefield.
