As reported by New Scientist, a chip with hundreds of thousands of human nerve cells has been taught to play the computer game DOOM. This was achieved by drawing on the experience of training AI bots.

Human nerve cell chip takes things to the next level

New Scientist learned from scientists that human nerve cells on such a chip coped with the task even better than a person who would shoot enemies at random. Despite this, they still performed worse than experienced players – they do not hide this.

Scientists believe that the chip's success indicates that in the future, nerve cell-based devices will be able to control more complex functions, such as robot hands.

As mentioned earlier, not so long ago, scientists from Cortical Labs had already programmed a chip with over 800,000 neurons to teach it to play the computer game Pong.

In the new experiment, they used a chip that contained about a quarter of the neurons that the first prototype had.

These cells were connected to a network of electrodes, through which they were sent information about the game environment, as well as instructions about the correctness or incorrectness of an action in the game.

Given the fact that the new chip with nerve cells learned much faster than standard systems on silicon chips, it could become the basis of biocontrolled robots in the future.
