A parable about how enemies can benefit you

A parable about how enemies can benefit you 2

Yesterday, while leafing through an old book, I came across a fable that surprisingly fits our reality well, Ukr.Media reports.

Somewhere out there, in some abstract ancient kingdom (God, how I hate these cardboard historical decorations, but bear with me), there was a specific judicial system. Before execution, the condemned person was given a chance to draw lots. Two pieces of paper in a bag: life or death. You drew the first one – you go home to drink wine, you drew the second – well, sorry, it's not your day. Convenient. The judges seemed to be taking responsibility off themselves and delegating it to providence.

And so one man opened his own business. He got a little carried away, started making a decent living, and, of course, gained “well-wishers.” These guys didn't bother with trifles like black PR or complaints to the tax office – they simply set him up so that the court handed down a death sentence. But that didn't seem enough to them. Knowing about the lottery with the bag, they bribed the right people and threw in two pieces of paper with the word “death.” An absolutely win-win strategy, if you think about it.

Of course, our hero had friends. They somehow found out about this long-distance walker, snuck into his cell and, with very tragic faces, suggested making a scandal. Demanding an audit of the bag, checking it, reviewing the case. Normal human logic. But the guy was happy for some reason. He asked everyone to shut up and just wait for the morning. His friends decided that he had lost his temper due to stress, and they had already begun to mentally divide his property.

The next morning he goes out to the judges, reaches into his bag, pulls out a piece of paper, and… stupidly swallows it. Without reading.

The judges froze. The procedure was disrupted. What to do? That's right, look at what piece of paper was left inside. And there, as we remember, “death.” Accordingly, iron bureaucratic logic immediately recognized that the piece of parchment that was now being digested in the accused's stomach was “life.” The guy was released.

This whole story is not about karma, justice, or universal balance. I've always been amused by this sweet Instagram wisdom: “if you have enemies, it means you're successful and they envy you.” No, if you have enemies, it only means that someone wants to take your money, your time, or your peace of mind. Sometimes people do mean things just because they can, without any connection to your outstanding talents.

But the way this guy used their own paranoia against them… There's a certain aesthetic to it. When you're backed into a corner and the system is playing dirty, you don't have to bang your head against the wall or scream about the injustice of the world.
