Angie Best, the widow of legendary footballer George Best, who died in 2005 at the age of 59, is battling a terrible illness. The football icon's ex-wife has shared a heartbreaking photo on social media of herself undergoing chemotherapy in a Swiss hospital after being diagnosed with bowel cancer.

“I’m trying to smile,” she wrote under the photo, thanking everyone who helped raise the 35,000 pounds (about $47,000) needed for treatment. “I didn’t realize how sick I was. I want to sincerely and from the bottom of my heart thank you, my friends, for your kindness.”

Angie and George's only son Colum, 44, recently announced on Instagram that his 73-year-old mother had colon cancer that had spread to her liver. “I haven't cried in years, but I've been on an emotional rollercoaster since my mother was diagnosed,” he wrote.
Northern Irishman George Best is arguably the greatest footballer of all time, having never played in a World Cup or European Championship final. However, he enjoyed great success with Manchester United in the 1960s, culminating in winning the European Cup and the Ballon d'Or in 1968.

Best was known as a womanizer, but in 1975 he fell madly in love with Angie. In 1981 they had a son, Colum. They divorced six years later due to Best's addiction to alcohol and domestic violence. “I spent 90 percent of the money I earned on booze, girls and expensive cars. In 1969 I gave up on women and alcohol. It was the worst 20 minutes of my life,” confessed the Fifth of the Beatles, as his devoted fans dubbed him.
Previously, “FACTS” reported that the wife of football legend Ronald Koeman was re-diagnosed with cancer.
