The legendary Soviet basketball player, two-time Olympic champion Ulyana Semenova, died in her sleep in her apartment in Riga at the age of 74, the official website of the Latvian Basketball Union reports. The famous Olympic champion, who was three times recognized as the best in Europe, has passed away.

A native of the Latvian village, Medumi Semenova was the leader of the famous TTT (Riga) team from 1968 to 1987, becoming a 15-time champion of the Soviet Union, an 11-time winner of the European Champions Cup, a winner of the Lilian Ronchetti Cup and the USSR Cup, and a four-time champion of the Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR.

After going abroad, the basketball player became the vice-champion of Spain in 1988 as part of the Tintoretto club from Getafe.

Playing for the Soviet Union national team, the famous center became the Olympic champion twice, the world champion three times, and the European champion 10 times.

Ulyana Semenova, who had no family or children, was included in the Guinness Book of Records as the tallest professional basketball player in history (213 cm), and in 1993 she became the first non-American to be inducted into the World Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield.

The famous basketball player has had health problems in recent years. In 2017, she underwent heart surgery, and in the spring of 2022, after a comminuted fracture, her leg was amputated. Semenova moved exclusively in a wheelchair, so leaving the house was a big problem for her.
