The tragedy occurred at the Savin-Kuk ski resort in the north of the country, when the Stuttgart player and his wife were in a double chairlift. Due to a cable break, one of the chairs became detached, which led to a serious collision with another lift. As a result of the impact, Sebastian lost his balance and fell from a height of about 70 meters. Medical services were unable to help the football player: he died on the spot from his injuries. Hertner's 30-year-old wife, who was stuck in the lift, was evacuated with a broken leg.

“This summer we were still enjoying life. Now this is our last memory together,” former German goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand captioned a black-and-white photo with his friend Hertner. “It’s a reminder of how fragile and precious life is, especially now, at Christmas. It’s very sad.”

At the age of 34, the central defender was an active footballer, leading the 5th division team ETSB from Hamburg onto the field with the captain's armband.
