Goals from Daniel Munoz and Eddie Nketiah ensured Crystal Palace reached the FA Cup quarter-finals with a 3-1 win over 10-man Millwall at Selhurst Park, but the win was marred by an injury to Jean-Philippe Mateta.
The game began with a worrying incident: just eight minutes had passed when Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts was sent off for a dangerous foul on Palace striker Mateta, who was forced off the pitch on a stretcher and taken to hospital.
An own goal from Japhet Tanganga opened the scoring for the hosts in the 33rd minute, and Munoz added another for the Eagles seven minutes later.
Wes Harding cut the deficit for the visitors in first-half injury time before Nketiah, who came on as a substitute for Mateta, extended Palace's lead nine minutes from time.
The match started with a scary moment when Roberts came out to play the ball, stretching out his leg and hitting the head of oncoming Palace striker Mateta.
There was a lengthy break to treat the French player, who was then carried off on a stretcher and replaced by Nketiah, while a VAR check led to Roberts being sent off.
Club chairman Steve Parish later confirmed to the BBC that the striker had been taken to hospital with a “serious gash behind the ear and a head injury”, describing the foul as “the most careless action on a football pitch” he had ever seen.
Nketiah was determined to avenge his teammate and soon put the ball home, only for his goal to be disallowed for a handball in the attack, while Palace goalkeeper Matt Turner had a bit of a struggle when Josh Cockburn's cross was deflected towards him.
Nketiah had another good shot saved by substitute Millwall goalkeeper Lukas Jensen, who then stuck out a leg to deny Chelsea loanee Ben Chilwell a first-time winner
