Syrian government forces regained control over the Eastern ghouta, the Russian centre of the Syrian reconciliation announced.
The Russian military said that the Syrian army has taken control of Damascus suburb of East ghouta, which still was under the control of Jaish al-Islam militant group.
“Today was a momentous event in the history of the Syrian Arab Republic. The national flag flew over the building … the city Council has marked regained control over this settlement, and, therefore, over the whole of Eastern ghouta,” said head of the Centre for Syrian reconciliation mayor Yury Evtushenko reporters.
Previously, the evacuation of Jaysh al-Islam fighters and their families remaining in the East Huta was started through the checkpoint Muhayam al-Wafedin. Up to eight thousand members and about 40 thousand members of their families, in total, were reportedly evacuated from the Duma.
Recently the local media reported that residents of the city of Duma in Eastern ghouta took to the streets, urging militants to join in a truce with the Syrian government.
